Fish Species caught of Cape York Back to List

Trevally

(family: carangidae)

The blue water fishing across the top of Cape York holds many of the Trevally species. Giant, Bludger, Diamond, Brassy, and Golden Trevally to name a few. Generally not known for their edible qualities, with the odd exception, (Brassy and Golden trevally when eaten fresh, are excellent), they are renown for their hard fighting. Even a small trevally on light gear will provide an exceptional fight.

Trevally will take baits and lures, and are generally found on deep drop offs adjacent to headlands and reef.

Giant Trevally are the most powerful of the species, and as the name suggests, the largest. The biggest GT I’ve caught was 37kg, and took a lengthy 1.5 hrs to land. Pound for pound, in my opinion, the GT is at the top of the pile of sport fish, and not for the faint hearted, nor cheap tackle!

Spinning poppers for these fish is spectacular and explosive, providing a lasting memory for the lucky angler. There are no bag limits for Trevally on the east coast.
