Queenfish

(family: carangidae)

Queenies are prevalent across the top from March through June, though can be caught year round. They are a spectacular sport fish, due to their hard runs and tail dancing antics (sometimes referred to as ‘poor mans marlin‘).

Schools of fish can be found, at the mouths of estuaries and the surrounding flats, and on pressure points off headlands and islands.

Like tuna, Queenies can be fickle in their eating habits, so matching artificial tackle to the bait size they are eating is important. When matched successfully, they are a sucker for metal slices and poppers, cast to schooling fish.

On the table they are good when eaten fresh, however they do not freeze well. They are great in nummus (a Torres Strait recipe of raw fish, pickled in vinegar).

There is no bag limit on Queenfish.
