Fish Species caught of Cape York Back to List

Jewfish

(family: sciaenidae)

Jewies are somewhat of a holy grail for many fisherman, particularly southern anglers. Their size, power and good eating qualities make them a worthy opponent.

These fish congregate in schools, and the sight of the first fish coming to the boat, can almost guarantee a busy session while the bite lasts. Jew are found in deep holes in both estuary and inshore waters of the cape, and are caught on livies, squid and strip baits sent to the depths. Larger specimens of Black Jew are normally caught in the evening, however I have had the pleasure of landing quality fish during the day also.

The swim bladder of the Jew is quite sensitive when brought to the surface, and should be punctured prior to release. Alternatively, when numbers of these fish are being caught, a slow retrieval is recommended, so to cause minimum stress to the fish, which will assist in a healthy release.

Bag Limits in Qld apply, a min size of 45cm and max 10 fish per person applies.
